WORK REPORT
1.1 November
Gathering – Decriminalisation of Sex
Work
The November gathering
was held on the 30th and the theme was
“Decriminalisation of Sex Work”. Although not a
lot of sex workers could attend the event that
day, we enjoyed the discussion and ideas and
opinions were given and shared on the preferred
mode of law reform.
We started the
session with a brief introduction about
“legalisation” and “decriminalisation” of sex
work, yet we avoided some very conceptual
discussion and instead focused on understanding
on how fellow sex workers are impacted by the
existing laws and what kind of changes that we
hope to make.
It is hoped that the legal
provision “Soliciting for an immoral purpose”
can be omitted and that the government can take
the New Zealand model into reference and
consider allowing up to 4 sex workers to operate
in a single apartment, so that mutual help and
support among sex workers within the same
premises would be possible. It is also agreed
that sex workers should perform responsibility
of a citizen and pay tax if they can work safely
in a non-illegal setting.

1.2 AFRO Charity
Walkathon 2011
Thank you so much for
your support! AFRO’s annual charity walk was
held on 6 November this year. Although the
number of participants was not as high as last
year, we were very happy and moved to see that
some sex workers came all the way to show
support right after work.
As at 30
November, the event raised HK$17,400. We realise
that it is far less than last few years. If you
still have donation from your sponsors that is
to be passed to AFRO or if you would like to
support us, please kindly contact
us!

1.3 AFRO Charity
Bazaar
The Charity Bazaar this
year was held on 4 Dec at Tsim Sha Tsui Star
Ferry Pier. It was a success and raised more
than HK$10,000 (exact amount to be confirmed).
The money raised in this event will be used for
covering the operating cost of AFRO.
Our
grateful thanks go to all volunteers who were
there with us for the event! Without your
support it never could have
happened!

3 AFRO NEWS
READING
Taiwan to legalise prostitution
in red-light districts... but no-one is willing
to build a sex zone Daily
Mail 18 Nov 2011
"Taiwan is moving
towards legalising the world’s oldest profession
- but there's a catch.
Vice girls can now
offer services legally in designated red-light
districts and neither the prostitute nor the
customer will be prosecuted, however there are
no sex zones in the country.
And so far
no local governments are prepared to create one
of these districts because of fears over a jump
in crime rates and plunging property prices 'You
[the government] tell us that both the sex
worker and the client would not be penalised
within the district, but where is it?' asked
Chung Chun-chu, secretary general of the
Collective of Sex Workers and Supporters..."
AFRO's comments:
The new policy
is supposed to legalise sex work and improve the
working environment of sex workers. Yet no local
government is willing to designate a sex zone in
its district. It implies a complete ban on the
sex trade as both sex workers and their clients
would be punished for a transaction outside the
designed red-light districts (which at this
moment do not exist). It not only does nothing
to contribute to the development of a harmonious
society, but also poses a greater risk to the
sex workers.
