1 SEX INDUSTRY
BIZ NEWS
1.1 CAUTION: Hidden
Camera!
Recently sex work and
sex workers have been a popular topic for
magazines and newspapers. Photos of sex workers
are widely published and unfortunately most of
them are little or not at all processed which
clearly show the faces of the sex workers.
In spite of the ethics issues and the
controversy, apparently secret photo/video
taking has become a common practice of some
reporters. And even among sex workers’ clients,
hidden or spy cameras are also used. Some bad
clients secretly take photos of sex workers whom
they visit and/or video of the sex scenes. Some
may even upload them to the internet and share
them with a lot of
“friends”...

2.2 Protest against
Next Magazine and East Weekly
AFRO,
together with JJJ Association, Zi Teng, Teen’s
Key and Midnight Blue, held a joint press
conference on 4 Aug, to condemn Next Magazine

privacy. The two magazines secretly took
pictures of sex workers and published them in
their issues no. 1116 and 412 respectively.
These pictures were little or not at all
processed and clearly showed the faces of the
sex workers, which we consider a severe abuse of
sex workers’ privacy. We also protested against
Next Magazine for its highly disrespectful
choice of words.
10 sex workers attended
the press conference that day and responded to
the incident. We demanded the media

Most of the time
people label themselves to identify with certain
groups, and also to distance themselves from
some others. It may be true that few people
would desire to identify with sex workers
because of the social stigma attached to the
industry and the workers. However, it cannot be
denied that we do share a lot of similarities
and even if differences exist they do not
justify discrimination.
